flying

Dear Henry,

I am still pretty woozy from all the excitement yesterday. I wanted to tell you all about it right away, but Erik said I needed to rest after flying out across the ocean and floating all the way back. Boy, I was really tired. I slept all night! And today I was still sleepy, so I just relaxed and read some books. It's kind of hard for me to sit up... mostly because I'm made of paper.

After it stopped raining yesterday, Erik said, "Let's go to Huntington Beach." That's a famous surfing town about seven miles from where he lives, and we went over there about 4 o'clock. It was still pretty cloudy, but here I am at the famous Pacific Coast Highway, a road that goes up and down along the coast of America!

Because it was so windy, Erik propped me up with a stick. I was having fun shoveling in the sand. You can see the ocean behind me. The waves were pretty high! I wanted to get nearer to the water, but Erik said, "NO WAY." He was afraid I would get carried off to sea, and he wasn't far off!

Soon I started making a few friends. This busy pigeon said hello, but he didn't stop to talk.

Then a nice seagull named Bill came along and talked to us about all sorts of things.

He told us that seagulls like to eat anything they can find, like the stuff inside shells and even bugs!

When I said that I was made of paper and that Erik was worried I might blow away, guess what Bill did! He said, "You shouldn't be afraid to fly!" And he picked me up with his beak!

Oh, no! At first I was really scared. Erik said he was, too, and he jumped up so fast, he almost missed the shot of Bill lifting me off the beach. But he did get a picture of me and the flock of seagulls way out over the ocean.

Our poor friend Erik was so worried. He waited for an hour and then finally noticed some kelp (which is ocean seaweed), float back onto the shore. And there I was!

See the tattoo that Bill gave me on my head? No wonder I've been so woozy!

But don't worry. I started feeling much better right away. Here I am digging in the sand a few minutes later. Erik says I'm "no worse for wear."

I was dizzy though, and so excited. I dreamed of flying over the ocean all night long. Erik says we'll have a another adventure later this week. I don't know what he has planned, but I'll tell you as soon as I find out!

Your friend,

Flat Stanley
